They provide hands-on support for the rollout of the system. Do you get more immediate insights when working in shifts?
Cäcilie Elgeti: We're always on the ground looking at what needs to be improved. Our three-person project team split up into shift work, picked along and co-consolidated. In 2005, Connox went online with five products. Since then, a large infrastructure has grown in Laatzen. How is SYNAOS already supplementing the processes? CE We have four halls with a total area of around 35,000 square meters. There, we cover an estimated 75 percent of our orders with SYNAOS. In the so-called pick tower, there are shelves on four levels. Boxes with picked goods are transported between levels using conveyor technology. SYNAOS controls where these boxes need to go.
Do you have a specific example?
CE: Previously, we created order-based pick lists — a picker always processed two or three orders and had to run back and forth to do so. From the second floor of our pick tower to the first. That is now completely gone. We pick in batches, and it may be that — even with fast runners — four or five people are involved in picking an order.
What goals did you define before implementing the system?
CE: We have calculated that we will achieve a 30 percent increase in picking efficiency with SYNAOS. The system makes work much easier. Goods flows and routes are optimized, resources can be controlled. The increase in efficiency is already noticeable.
Has the system already been able to take on specific planning tasks for you?
CE: SYNAOS ensures that only goods are picked up on the production line if there is also capacity to pick them up from the assembly line. Or an item that SYNAOS knows is barely being sold is stored at a higher location. In general, the software helps to block and avoid human errors — an unnecessary scan or careless intervention in controlled processes.
How are employees reacting to the new system?
CE: I notice that people are interested in the new system and also see the added value in it. They couldn't wait for us to go live. Simply because they no longer have to run up and down.
About the customer: Connox GmbH was founded in 2005 by two former schoolmates Thilo Haas and Kristian Lenz. The online retailer of premium home and living products, which operates worldwide, processes up to 3,000 orders a day in Laatzen near Hanover with regular 150 employees.
