VDA 5050 is a young standard that has regional roots due to its origins in the German automotive industry. This origin is logical, as the German automotive industry has been a leader in automation for many years and there was a need for a standard here first. We can now clearly see that the VDA 5050 is gaining in importance nationwide and, for example, US customers are showing great interest in appropriate solutions.
A standard such as VDA 5050 is a necessity for using mobile robots on large scales. The future of mobile robotics cannot be that providers of proprietary systems force end users to either purchase different applications exclusively from one provider — or to accept an IT architecture with various parallel fleet managers. The limited space in production plants alone requires systems from different providers to interact and not act as stand-alone areas. The closed “designer ecosystem of intralogistics” is therefore wishful thinking on the part of individual providers and, in our experience, does not in any way meet the interests of customers.
The VDA 5050 standard makes it possible to continue to master the increasing complexity of mobile robot fleets through continuous automation and digitization of intralogistic value-added processes: Based on the VDA 5050 standard, centralized fleet control systems navigate the individual applications across manufacturers and as needed and use them in a targeted manner. Standards are therefore a key element on the way to a smart factory and the enabler for a holistic and systemic analysis of material flows.
VDA 5050 is not a panacea, but requires close and proactive collaboration between robot and software providers to close gaps in the standard. The latest version 2.0.0 is an important step in the right direction and shows that the VDA 5050 is a living standard that balances the needs of customers and providers.
When software and robot manufacturers collaborate closely, the full development of the respective strengths of the robot and the software as well as the continuous development of the VDA 5050 is ensured — and the customer wins. This also bridges the gap between giving customers maximum freedom of choice without limiting the performance of the products. Without close collaboration between fleet management and robot manufacturers, the system performance and thus the reputation of the VDA 5050 suffers.
The dreaded functional limitation of robots is a consequence of poor cooperation between the providers concerned. If the necessary collaboration exists, the standard offers a fundamental advantage: cross-manufacturer predictability for the customer and thus the basis for scalable optimization of intralogistics.
